Phung Hung mural street

2023.07.28

Are you an art lover and nostalgic for the past? If the answer is yes, then this is definitely the place for you. Having a length of about 200 meters with nineteen different vivid paintings that remind people of old Hanoi, Phung Hung mural street has become a place not to be missed when visiting Hanoi. With a strong urbanization rate taking place in Vietnam today, especially Hanoi - the capital land, the economic and political center of the country, it is inevitable that the cultural activities and living features have gradually faded and been replaced by the skyscrapers, amusement parks. Therefore, the People's Committee of Hoan Kiem district has decided to start construction of Phung Hung mural street to recreate the capital’s beauty that seems to be receding into oblivion.

“Mural Street” was officially started at the end of 2018 and completed 3 months later, and has been positively welcomed by everyone. The paintings on the nineteen arches of the railway bridge on Phung Hung Street were created by artists from Vietnam and also from South Korea. The nineteen paintings here are nineteen pieces of Hanoi's puzzle, although it is incomplete, it has partly recreated the past life of an old Hanoi. You can see the image of the old grocery store, women carrying flowers, jingling trains, Tet gifts... on the arch of the bridge when you visit Phung Hung Mural Street.

From a pretty sloppy and dirty space near the Long Bien bridge, the brick arches here have been renewed with new colors, attracting the attention of both local people and foreign tourists. There is a fact that some of the frescoes here have been painted in 3D space to effectively interact with the viewer. All of them evoke nostalgia, which helps the local people or even tourists in Hanoi easily receive cultural and historical values in a natural way.

Moreover, Phung Hung mural street is also intended as a place for cultural exchange, connecting the space of Dong Xuan market with the space of Hang Ma and Hang Luoc streets. This place regularly holds cultural exchange activities such as "The quintessence of Vietnamese culture" event, which promotes traditional craft villages to tourists from all over the world, especially international tourists coming to Vietnam. Phung Hung mural street is also the place to connect the history and memory of Hanoi, with contemporary art in the community space.

With today's hustle and bustle life, Hanoi appears as a destination to keep the old, peaceful and profound beauty. Phung Hung mural street adds more highlight to the capital, bringing brilliant beauty with a little nostalgic but dear atmosphere.
