The Street of Books, Dinh Le
13/10/2023
With thousands of books, ranging from the latest releases to those no longer in print, Dinh Le street is hailed as Hanoi's book haven, a paradise that book lovers cannot afford to miss.

Stretching from Ngo Quyen to Dinh Tien Hoang, this street may be only a hundred meters long, but it is home to dozens of bookstores of various sizes. Hanoi's book lovers often whisper to one another that a visit to Dinh Le guarantees finding what you need. With an extensive range of genres that fully cater to readers' needs and reasonable prices, the atmosphere here is always bustling, especially on weekends.

When talking about book streets, one cannot overlook Mao Bookstore, a tranquil spot in the midst of the bustling city, hidden away in a small and secluded alleyway on the second floor of Block 5 on Dinh Le street.

Passing through the narrow, winding stairs and the hallway that has been tinged with the color of time, you will find Mao Bookstore, a long-standing bookshop that is, in fact, the birthplace of Dinh Le's book street. Without a grandiose sign, only a simple line reading "Mao Bookstore" with an arrow pointing to the second floor, this store is separated from the noisy exterior and located in a small, unassuming attic that exudes an immensely peaceful aura.

Here, you can easily find any type of book you need, from Buddhism, philosophy, feng shui, and even rare books that have long been out of print. The immense space of knowledge, the aroma of books and the faint fragrance of essential oils, give this place its own unique and alluring character.

The space is designed in a vintage style, with closely spaced bookshelves that bear the distinctive features of the 80s and 90s. The outstanding highlight is the spiral staircase that vertically ascends and descends, making visitors feel enraptured.
Mao Bookstore currently sells around 10,000 books, each title having dozens or hundreds of copies that serve both wholesale and retail customers.
Not only a bookstore, Mao Bookstore also serves as an open library with free reading spaces, making it an ideal location for studying and working. Here, one can find a peaceful place, enjoy a cup of tea alongside their favorite book, and immerse themselves in the slow-moving flow of time.
