Distinctive coffees you should definitely try when traveling in Vietnam

Vietnam is not only known as one of the world’s leading coffee producers, but also boasts a unique, rich, and highly creative coffee culture.
Thanks to the robust aroma and deep body characteristic of Robusta, Vietnamese coffee has left a strong impression on gourmets around the world. In addition to the traditional iced milk coffee (ca phe sua da), it’s also appealing that you can enjoy diverse and unique regional styles such as egg coffee, coconut coffee, salt coffee, and fruit coffee.
These coffees have been highly praised by globally renowned media such as the Michelin Guide, CNN Travel, and The New York Times, and are special cups you should try at least once when visiting Vietnam.
Below are representative coffees we highly recommend experiencing on a trip to Vietnam.

2. Salt Coffee • A mysterious and captivating taste born from salt

In 2010 in Hue, “salt coffee (ca phe muoi)” was devised by Ho Thi Tan Phuong and Tran Nguyen Huu Phong, owners of “Salt Coffee” in Hue City. When they opened in 2010, the desire to “try something new” gave birth to this unique drink.

Salted cream (milk cream with a small amount of salt) is placed on top of black coffee. The subtly salty cream enhances the coffee’s bitterness and sweetness, and the moment it touches your palate, a complex, profound flavor unfolds.

As the founders said in an interview with CNN Travel, “The name ca phe muoi piques people’s curiosity, and the taste brings them back again.”

Salt coffee is a must-try for those seeking a truly unique Vietnamese coffee experience.

3. Coconut Coffee  • Coolness that feels like a tropical breeze

Coconut coffee is a drink where the firm bitterness of black coffee is harmoniously combined with the mellow sweetness of coconut milk and condensed milk.
Coconut coffee not only reflects new ideas in Vietnam’s coffee culture, but also shows how beloved the tropical fruit “coconut” is among Vietnamese people.

To craft the perfect coconut coffee, baristas carefully blend coconut milk, condensed milk, and ice until creamy. Frothed black coffee is then poured into the glass, and the coconut milk is slowly layered to create a beautiful stratification and an aromatic cup.
The finished coconut coffee delights both palate and eyes—an experience that resonates with all five senses. The Michelin Guide also praised it: “with each sip, coconut coffee transports drinkers to a tropical paradise

4. Avocado Coffee • A drink for the health-conscious

Avocado coffee is a new coffee drink born in Da Lat’s cool climate. Using local avocados, it offers a unique and gentle taste, and is popular among gourmets as a new coffee style.
Avocado coffee is made by blending ripe avocado with condensed milk and ice until smooth and creamy. Then filtered black coffee made from a Robusta or Arabica blend is poured in and shaken well with the avocado to achieve a silky, aromatic mouthfeel.
On the palate, the faint bitterness of coffee and the rich, full-bodied flavor of avocado create an unexpected harmony. Smooth and elegant, neither too sweet nor too heavy—pure bliss.
Avocado coffee not only awakens the taste buds in a single sip but also conveys how Vietnamese coffee culture has evolved.

5. Fruity Coffee  • A new coffee style

Fruity coffee is a new style that adds the refreshing aroma and taste of fruit to coffee’s gentle bitterness.
By using fruits such as orange and lemon, it gains a crisp acidity and natural sweetness, resulting in a light taste you can gulp down even on hot days. Combined with the rich aroma of 100% Arabica beans, it’s a cup that feels like a breeze of fruit.
Bright and easy to drink, fruity coffee changes the image that “coffee is bitter” and will bring new discoveries to your coffee experience.
